FDC Attributes Sewage Leaks to Improper Waste Disposal by Residents

The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has stated that ongoing sewage leaks in its housing units in Hulhumalé are primarily caused by blockages resulting from improper waste disposal, including diapers and construction debris.

Sewage leakage issues were initially reported in February in Towers 11, 12, 15, and 16. Although the problem was addressed at the time, a recent video circulating on social media shows a major leak from a junction, with sewage spreading across the surrounding area and reaching the main road.

Responding to inquiries, FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel stated that the issue has been resolved three times over the past four weeks. He stressed that the recurring blockages are largely due to residents disposing of sanitary pads, diapers, and concrete dust into the sewage system.

Hamdhan revealed that during the most recent maintenance work, 28 diapers were removed from the junction. He also noted that air conditioning provisions in the flats were originally sealed using PU foam. However, some residents reportedly flushed this material down toilets instead of disposing of it properly. This has further worsened the problem.

The leaks have been reported within the 4,000 unit housing project that was constructed by two Indian firms. The issues have emerged less than six months after residents began moving in. Concerns are also increasing over the accumulation of waste around the base of the towers as occupancy continues to rise in the Fahi Dhiriulhun flats.
