A United States special representative is scheduled to visit the Maldives as part of an official tour focused on strengthening partnerships across the Indian Ocean region.
Sergio Go, the US Special Representative for South and Central Asia, will travel to both the Maldives and Sri Lanka from Friday through Tuesday, according to an announcement by the US State Department.
The visit aims to deepen regional collaboration and facilitate high level discussions on security cooperation. During his stay in the Maldives, Sergio is expected to meet with senior government officials to explore ways to enhance bilateral security ties.
Discussions are also set to cover potential US support in areas such as infrastructure development and economic growth.
The trip comes as the Maldives and the United States mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, which were formally established on 9 April 1966.
In Sri Lanka, talks will focus on strengthening maritime and port security, alongside opportunities to expand trade relations.
The State Department emphasized that both the Maldives and Sri Lanka play a vital role in ensuring stability in the Indian Ocean, noting that the visit will contribute to broader efforts to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo Pacific region.
